COACH DAVID COPELAND BIOGRAPHY
Founder and Head Coach, David Copeland, is a registered coach and lifetime professional member with USA Fencing and is certified in all Safesport and CPR training.
Awarded the "Spirit of Fencing" Award by USA Fencing for his dedication to the sport of fencing, Coach Copeland has been teaching exclusively in the Tri-State area for over 25 years, with an established reputation for excellence in teaching and coaching his sport.
Coach Copeland has held national ratings in epee, foil and saber. In addition to being head coach, he also has worked as a referee for the Virginia Division, USFA and served on their board of directors. His students have won countless medals in state and regional. and national tournaments.
He started fencing in 1991 at the age of 20, first training in classical fencing with Shenandoah Swordsmen, under Dr. Peter Ryan. (Coach Ryan was a student of the famous champion, Georgio Santelli.)
By 1993, David advanced to an assistant coach and took over as head coach in 1994. Although highly competitive in the sport, winning countless medals, he felt his calling was to be the teacher and expose people of all ages to the sport he loves so much. From 1996-1998, he was hired as head coach of Shepherdstown Fencing club. In 1998, he started his own fencing club, Out of Nowhere Fencing.Since 2001, coaching has been his full-time career. His students have won countless gold medals and many have qualified for USA Fencing Nationals and Junior Olympics time and again. His proven teaching methods have developed fencers who understand and love the sport. As with any sport, it all begins with proper instruction, taught by a qualified and dedicated teacher/coach. Fencing is no different in this regard. Coach Copeland provides a personalized fitness program for his students, with proven results, and is very dedicated to seeing his students succeed.
